Stuff I've Talked About

Daily Dilemma- Stolen Identity

Dear Kelly,

On February 14th, 2007 my sister stole my identity and every penny I had in the bank.  At the time my mother begged me not to call the police, because she's family, so I didn't.  Now, years later, I'm still trying to dig myself out of the hole she created for me.  She destroyed my credit and left me penniless and when I expected my mom and  others to step up and help me get back on my feet- no one lifted a finger to do anything for me because they were more concerned about keeping my sister out of prison.  So now I'm wondering if it's too late to report her to the police.

Sincerely,

Financially, and Emotionally, Ruined

Dear F.E.R.,

I'm not sure if there's a statute of limitations on identity theft and the only way to know for sure is to stop by your nearest police station and file a report.  Make sure to bring any and all evidence that you have as they will need it for their investigation.  Also, if your sister is currently using your identity make sure you have all of her information to share with the officer who takes your report: address, phone, email, car with license plate, etc.   As for moving on emotionally, I really don't know how you could ever forgive and forget something like that so I wouldn't even try.  That goes for your mom too, every bit as it does for your sister, as your mother basically chose her over you.  I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Please keep me posted,

Kelly McKay
