With only seven Moonmen being handed out at the MTV Video Music Awards over the weekend, that left about two hours open for the usual craziness. And the 2014 VMAs didn’t disappoint. Here are five of the wildest moments from the show:
5. Katy Perry Outfit
Katy Perry and her special guest, Riff Raff, got their denim on in celebration of the greatest power couple of them all: Justin and Britney. Katy and her “This Is How We Do” remix collaborator wore full-on jean outfits, which she directly attributed to Britney Spears and last year’s Video Vanguard Award winner, Justin Timberlake. While her look might drive you crazy, Katy won’t be crying a river, because Brit Brit herself was pleased with the outrageous fashion homage, writing:
4. Jessie, Nicki & Ari's Opening Number
As far as opening numbers go, there’s no better way to kick off a show with a bang than with a song that actually has “Bang” in the title… twice. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj got the ball rolling with recreations of their respective “Break Free” and “Anaconda” videos. Nicki seemingly had a wardrobe malfunction and had to hold her dress closed for the last half of their medley. But if you’re worried that the “Lady Marmalade”-esque performance was all about the spectacle, Jessie J has rightfully earned a status boost with her incredible range on “Bang Bang.”
3. The Artist to Watch
No offense to Fifth Harmony, but we’re kind of shocked that they took home Artist to Watch. With “Fancy” as the undeniable song of summer, Charli XCX seemingly had a leg up on the competition. Other than that, 5 Seconds of Summer were also in the running, and considering their fans voted 78 million times to earn them the Best Lyric Video award, Fifth Harmony pulled off a surprising feat. Then again, their pre-show performance of “Bo$$” was pretty killer.
2. Miley Cyrus's Selfless Moment
Miley Cyrus had everyone’s tongues wagging after her performance at last year’s VMAs, but she had something entirely different planned for Sunday’s show. After teasing during the pre-show that she was shaking things up, Miley won the award for Video of the Year for “Wrecking Ball.” But instead of hitting the stage, a surrogate accepted the award for her to raise awareness about youth homelessness. In doing so, Miley did the most shocking thing of all, she stepped out of the spotlight.
1. Beyonce’s Flawless Finish
As usual, Beyonce will likely be the most widely-discussed star to attend the VMAs. But it wasn’t even her 16-minute medley that left her fans breathless – and it did – but it was her acceptance speech after the fact that really did it. Queen Bey officially put the split rumors to rest by bringing the world’s most adorable child, Blue, Ivy on stage with her hubby, Jay Z, as she gave an emotional speech accepting the Video Vanguard Award. We’re not crying, we swear. We just have something in our eyes.
