Ryan Lochte, inventor of the word “Jeah,” celebrated a birthday over the weekend, and it got us reminiscing about “What Would Ryan Lochte Do?” The E! docuseries proved that reality TV fame really isn’t for everyone. Here are 5 celebrities (Lochte included) whose reality shows flamed out fast:
1. Ryan Lochte
A gold medal-winning swimmer he is, but a gold star TV personality he is not. Lochte learned the hard way that he should perhaps keep his day job after his reality show, “What Would Ryan Lochte Do?,” was canceled by E! after eight episodes of looking for love and being a man both at night and in the morning. Better luck to the ultimate “bro” in the 2016 Summer Games!
2. Paris Hilton
From “The Simple Life” with her best pal Nicole Richie to her search for a new best pal in “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF,” Hilton has been around the block a few times when it comes to reality TV. But by 2011, when “The World According to Paris” aired on Oxygen, it became the least watched series of the year for Oxygen and was quickly dispatched. These days, people seem more interested in her former assistant and "closet organizer," Kim Kardashian.
3. The “Non-Lindsay” Lohans
Lindsay Lohan didn’t have time to appear on reality TV back in ‘08. But her family did, and this show – also on E! – revolved around her little sister Ali’s attempt to land big break in Hollywood with the assistance of her momager, Dina. While the show only lasted a season, at least LiLo fans finally got that peek into her life with this year’s “Lindsay.” Still, we wouldn't have this without it.
4. Britney Spears (and Kevin Federline)
The most interesting part about “Britney & Kevin: Chaotic” was watching how truly crazy these two were about one another. This being 2005, many people thought Brit was killing her career by doing a reality show. And alas, neither the show nor the marriage lasted in the end. Thankfully, it worked out for both of them, as Britney’s career has recouped quite nicely and Kevin has since had a solid run as a reality star (“Celebrity Fit Club,” “Excess Baggage”).
5. Alexis Neiers
In its time, “Pretty Wild” was truly wild on so many levels that it became a regularly feature on “The Soup” over the course of its run. Emma Watson later starred in “The Bling Ring,” a movie about Neiers and her arrest in connection with the home invasions of numerous celebrities, including OrlandoBloom, LiLo, Rachel Bilson and Paris Hilton. “Pretty Wild,” eh? Just watch this video to find out why the show has since become a cult classic.
