Sandra Bullock is turning 50 over the weekend, and with recent roles like “The Heat” and “Gravity,” her status as an A-lister is more secure than ever. To help her celebrate the big 5-0, here are five things that always remind us of one of Hollywood’s most enduring talents:

5. Beauty Pageants

It’s been 14 years since Bullock’s smash hit “Miss Congeniality” was in theaters, but even now, we are reminded of her any time the Miss America contest rolls around. Her stunning transformation from tom-boy detective to elegant beauty queen – “It is a scholarship competition!” – comes to mind whenever we see a tiara. No one can ever rock the tiara and a sash quite like Sandra.

4. Kicking Butt

Despite her penchant for rom-coms in the ‘90s, Sandra has also gravitated to a number of butt-kicking roles. From the aforementioned “Miss Congeniality” to 2013’s “The Heat,” she’s proven that she can handle a weapon and has the guts to take down a bad guy. Sandra must be an adrenaline junkie (or enjoy playing one), because even when she’s not be the one doing the shooting, like in her 1993 movie “Demolition Man,” she sure is always near the action.

3. Adoption

Not that she wasn’t already America’s Sweetheart, but Sandra came close to sainthood when she took on the role of Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side.” In the movie, her character adopts a teen, real-life NFL player Michael Oher, before his success on the field. But Bullock has a much more personal connection to the adoption system, as that’s how she found her little boy, Louis. The single mother has been largely raising him by herself since she adopted him in 2010.

2. Romantic Comedies

For a while there, Sandra found herself typecast as a romantic comedy lead, frequently as a tightly-wound woman who never lets her hair down. That’s not a critique, as she’s starred in some of our favorites, from “Two Weeks Notice” to “The Proposal,” in which she agreed to a fake romance with Ryan Reynolds in order to stay in the U.S. Though we’re glad she’s been getting some Oscar-worthy material, we wouldn’t hate a return to the old Sandy either.

1. The Red Carpet

Sandra Bullock is one of Hollywood’s most down-to-Earth stars, and sometimes it’s hard to forget that she’s not truly “just like us.” Just look at her recent awards history: “The Blind Side” earned her an Oscar and a Golden Globe, while “Gravity” garnered critical acclaim and a whole host of new nominations. Needless to say, she’s given a lot of media attention, and unlike many of her peers, it’s always for something positive.
