Zendaya
will no longer be the “Princess of R&B” – not on the small screen, anyway.

The singer-actress has dropped out of Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic. The network confirmed the news on Twitter, posting, “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.”

“Because it’s someone that I honor and I respect so much, it has to be 128 percent, especially for all the fans, including myself,” she said at the BET Awards (via “Time”). “I didn’t feel like it was all the way there, so I didn’t want to do that.”

Within two weeks of her casting, Zendaya had already commented on criticism that she didn’t look enough like the late singer to portray her on-screen.

Aaliyah’s uncle has also said they would fight production on the film, refusing to license music for the biopic and considering legal action to stop it from moving forward.

But it’s not all bad news for Zendaya, whose Disney Channel Original Movie, “Zapped, scored more than 5 million viewers on Friday, serving as a solid launchpad for “Girl Meets World.”
