The team behind “The Giver” is finally unveiling the first trailer for the film.
The preview (via “Entertainment Weekly”) is heavy on exposition, introducing Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) and the show’s dystopian future society.
The teenage boy meets Jeff Bridges, playing the titular Giver, the keeper of memories. Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory, upon when he begins “to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.”
Meryl Streep’s Chief Elder gets a bit of screen time as she warns about free will, while Jonas’s parents, including Katie Holmes, are given short shrift in the 90-second spot.
Taylor Swift also appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as young Rosemary in the Weinstein Company's sci-fi thriller, adapted from Lois Lowry’s legendary young adult novel.
The book was followed by three sequels, “Gathering Blue,” “Messenger” and “Son,” so it’s possible that box office success could spawn a franchise.
“The Giver” is expected to open in theaters on August 15. Do you think the movie can live up to the book? Let us know in the comments!
