MTV is taking some heat for excluding Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen from the Best Hero category for the MTV Movie Awards.
In a petition, which has already garnered well over 13,000 signatures, calls “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” character’s absence on the ballot a sexist move on the part of the award show, “The Wrap” reports.
“There is not a single woman in the Hero Category,” the petition, created by Sophie Azran, reads. “Don’t let a strong woman like Katniss be overlooked!”
The current nominees list includes Henry Cavill from “Man of Steel,” Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins from “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and Channing Tatum’s character in “White House Down.”
The petition encourages MTV to honor more women in order to provide strong role models for young girls.
“Teen girls and young women everywhere need to see that courageous, principled women can be rewarded just like men,” Azran adds.
The 2014 MTV Movie Awards will air live on April 13, this time hosted by the one and only Conan O’Brien.
