“Paul Blart: Mall Cop” became a surprise smash upon its release back in 2009, and now the producers are planning a return to the food court.
According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” Sony Pictures is fast-tracking a sequel to the Kevin James-starring comedy with Andy Fickman (“She’s the Man”) in talks to helm the project.
Little else about the film’s plot or casting is known, but James will be back as a co-writer on the project alongside Nick Bakay (CBS’s “Mom”).
The original “Paul Blart,” which also starred Jayma Mays (“Glee”), Bobby Cannavale, and Stephen Rannazzisi (“The League”), grossed more than $146 million upon its release five years ago.
James played the titular mall cop, who had no choice but to step up his game after a gang of thieves threaten to take down the shopping center.
