2013 was a monumental year in pop music, with new records from Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Britney Spears and more. That said, pop has never been just about the music, and this year was no different. Here are 5 of the biggest pop star scandals of 2013:

1. Miley Cyrus’s Performance at the VMAs

It’s hard to pinpoint Miley Cyrus’s most scandalous moment of the year, from her high-profile split from fiancé Liam Hemsworth to lighting up on stage at the EMAs to her controversial “Wrecking Ball” video that sparked a feud with Sinead O’Connor. But it all began at the MTV Video Music Awards this summer, when the pop star sidled out of a giant bear, twerking, wearing a onesie and sticking her tongue out. It seems like everyone has been talking about Miley ever since, but maybe the truth is that “We Can’t Stop.

2. Beyonce Caught Lip-Synching at the Presidential Inauguration

Everyone knows that Queen Bey can really belt it out, which made her lip-synching at President Obama’s second inauguration all that more jaw-dropping. Proving that she is truly a class act, the singer copped to the controversy, admitting that she is “a perfectionist” and was afraid of messing up the song. Beyonce proceeded to stop the haters in their tracks with a flawless rendition of the National Anthem at a press conference. Any questions?

3. Justin Bieber’s Notable Quotables

Like Miley, it seems like Justin Bieber was going for a “more is more” philosophy with public appearances in 2013. Perhaps he’ll rethink that next year, unless he truly is “retiring” as he claimed on Christmas. Aside from his more run-in with the law in South America and allegedly urinating in a mop bucket while dissing Bill Clinton, his biggest gaffe came in Amsterdam. After visiting the Anne Frank house, the Biebs wrote in the guestbook: Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” At least President Clinton got an apology:

4. Taylor Swift’s Feud with Tina Fey & Amy Poehler

Usually, it’s Taylor Swift’s words that get her involved in a media scandal, but not this time. In mid-January, Taylor lashed out at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler after pair made a joke about her dating life while hosting the 70th annual Golden Globes: “You know what, Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son.” In response, the young singer quoted Madeleine Albright to “Vanity Fair”: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” Despite the feud, Tina and Amy will be back to host the Globes in January 2014.

5. Lady Gaga’s Twitter Beef with Adam Levine

Lady Gaga had a big year in 2013, shaking things up with “Applause” and getting raunchy in “Do What U Want.” But for all of the highlights, there were a few low moments, including flare-ups of her feuds with gossip blogger Perez Hilton and “Fashion Police” co-host Kelly Osbourne. But for all her strange behavior, her most-out-of-left-field moment was her feud with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. The “People” magazine’s Most Beautiful winner kicked things off, calling Gaga’s “Applause” out for “recycling old art for a younger generation” and calling her an art teacher. Her reply? “Uh oh guys the art police is here.’
