Miley Cyrus was somehow able to cram a year’s worth of scandal into a three month span.  She certainly did a fine job giving her public image a complete 180.  In honor of her 21st birthday on November 23, here are the craziest Miley Cyrus moments of 2013:

1.  Miley’s VMAs Performance

Miley did her best to make “twerking” a household phrase at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.  Before singing her song, “We Can’t Stop,” she jumped around in a teddy bear-inspired outfit surrounded by an entourage of life-sized dancing bears.

Just when we thought it was weird enough, Miley ripped off her bear outfit to reveal a flesh-colored bikini in time for a duet with Robin Thicke.  For the entirety of “Blurred Lines,” Miley – armed with a foam finger and provocative dance moves – gave us quite a memorable performance that vaulted her into the headlines.

2. Her “Wrecking Ball” Music Video

Barely two weeks after her eyebrow-raising stunt at the VMAs, Miley released the music video for her newest single, “Wrecking Ball.” The video shows Miley straddling a wrecking ball in the nude and using her now-famous tongue to lick a sledgehammer before smashing it through a wall.

The video has over 330 million views on YouTube to date and has led to numerous parody videos and pictures around the country.  Michigan’s Grand Valley State University was even forced to remove a wrecking ball sculpture from its campus due to an increasing number of Miley impersonators.

3. Miley’s “Rolling Stone” Cover Story

Once the recent buzz surrounding her began to die down, Miley sat down with “Rolling Stone” for an interview.  She discussed several topics, most notably her favorite drug and music video influences.  This issue happened to feature Miley on the cover, and as if we’ve come to expect anything different, she was nude…again.

“Weed is the best drug on Earth,” she told Rolling Stone.  This tidbit was far from revealing.  However, she would confirm her stance in Amsterdam later in the year.  More on that later.

Miley also went on to credit Irish singer, Sinead O’Connor as an influence for her “Wrecking Ball” video. “It’s like the Sinead O’Connor video [for “Nothing Compares 2 U”], but the most modern version.”

4. The Miley Cyrus / Sinead O’Connor Feud

This comparison did nothing but fire up O’Connor.  Almost immediately, she penned an open letter to Miley, criticizing the path the young star has chosen to alter her image. A devout feminist, Sinead O’Connor posited that Miley’s stark-naked approach was fuelled by the chauvinistic music industry.

Miley, of course, thought otherwise.  Not to be shown up, she promptly took to Twitter and mocked O’Connor’s mental state, likening her to Amanda Bynes, who has recently been battling a similar condition.

The hatchet has since been buried.  Neither one issued a formal apology, but they each said they’d rather not continue bickering.  Miley reiterated her admiration and Sinead wants to focus on the bigger picture.

5. Miley Hosts “SNL”

Still making the rounds after her recent breakout, Miley found herself pulling double duty, both hosting and performing on “Saturday Night Live.”

She made it a point to poke fun at herself during the show, referencing her VMAs stunt in her opening monologue and meeting her doppelganger (Vanessa Bayer).  Along with live performances of “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop,” Miley also touched on the government shutdown – playing a scantily-clad Michele Bachmann – and “Fifty Shades of Grey” film auditions.

6. Her MTV EMAs Shocker

Miley was back at it during her performance at the MTV European Music Awards in the Netherlands.  Backing up her claim in the “Rolling Stone” interview, she smoked pot onstage after receiving her award on stage.

Her stunt forced MTV to edit the live performance, as the bosses deemed marijuana too controversial to be aired. That wasn’t all, though.  Miley put on a familiar rendition of “We Can’t Stop,” where she showed that she can’t stop twerking.
