Reese Witherspoon is following up her critically-acclaimed turn in “Mud” with another dark drama, this time in “Devil’s Knot.”

The film is based on a book of the same name written about the real-life West Memphis Three case, in which three teens were convicted for the murders of three young children in Arkansas.

According to “Entertainment Weekly,” Witherspoon stars as one of the victim’s mothers, whose son was killed in 1993. Firth will play an investigator who believes the trio might be innocent.

The two-minute trailer focuses on the media spectacle and the paranoia of the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas where the murders took place, as the three suspects were accused of Satanism before their convictions.

Nearly two decades after their conviction, the three were released from prison. During their 18 year sentences, they were the subject of a trio of HBO documentaries called the “Paradise Lost” series.

“Devil’s Knot” also stars rising star Dane DeHaan, Mireille Enos (“The Killing”), and “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer.
