Stuff We Talked About

Lamar reviews - Guardians of the Galaxy

This is a tricky movie. I saw some trailers and wasn’t really interested in seeing it. I like Sci-Fi space adventure but couldn’t see Chris Pratt pulling that off. I did a little research and found out it had a Galaxy Quest feel to it. That was a movie with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver in 1999. It was a takeoff on Star Trek and space movies. If you’ve never seen it you should. It’s hilarious. The director refused to let Chris Pratt audition but his assistant finally convinced him to give Chris a shot. He hired him after 30 seconds of reading dialog. It turns out that Chris Pratt was the perfect choice for this movie. Most people know him for being Andy the goofy, lovable idiot on Parks and Recreation but he did play a Navy Seal in Zero Dark Thirty. For this movie he worked out for 6 months and he is cut up and has a few shirtless scenes to show it off. He is very convincing as a wise cracking action star.

Pratt plays Peter Quill and he is kidnapped by aliens in 1988 the night his mother dies from Cancer. He is raised by a group of intergalactic thieves and smugglers.
We fast forward to him as an adult who calls himself “Star Lord”. He is on a deserted planet stealing a metal orb. The orb is wanted by a lot of people. The group who raised him; Ronan, played by Lee Price who plans to wipe out the entire race of Xandarans; Thanos, played by Josh Brolin who wants to control the Universe; and The Collector, a man travels the universe gathering rare and powerful things, played by Benicio Del Toro.

Quill gets arrested and thrown into jail where he forms an alliance with some of his inmates. Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, an adopted daughter of Thanos; Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista, who wants revenge on Ronan for killing his family; Rocket who looks like a raccoon and is voiced by Bradley Cooper; and his sidekick, a giant live tree with amazing powers, Groot who only speaks one line over and over in the movie, “I am Groot”.
He is voiced by Vin Diesel. I’m sure he gets a ton of money for that, I just don’t understand why. It’s not like he’s James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman, I’m pretty sure the guy that puts out the donuts on the set could have said “I am Groot”.

I will say the Groot character stole most of the scenes he was in but you never know its Vin Diesel.

The production is great, the action is awesome, and the humor works every time. This is not your average Space Movie. If people know how much fun this movie is they will go see it. The only thing Quill brought from earth was his Walkman and mixed tape of 70s music. That is the sound track for the movie and it is awesome.

Its 2 hours long, Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action and some language.

My Score: A full 6PK of Bud!
