The bar for movies in 2014 has just been set. Not just for superhero movies, not for action movies, but for movies in general. This movie is fantastic! There was so must Testosterone coming off the screen I was afraid women might leave the theater with their voices 2 octaves lower and a goatee.
I did something out of the norm for this movie. Todd and I double dated. Todd took his girlfriend and I took Max. I did not pay for Max’s dinner because I didn’t want him to feel any end of the date pressure.
This is Chris Evans 3rd time as Captain America and he owns the part. I won’t go into how unbelievably well-built and handsome he is because Bob gets squirrely when I talk about that stuff but I did notice that Chris and I have something in common. When both of us look down we can’t see our shoes. The difference is, with him it’s his massive pecs, with me it’s my waistline. Scarlett Johansson joins him as S.H.I.E.L.D agent Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. I don’t have time to describe how kickass hot she is.
There is no point going over the details of the story other than to say it is a way better plot than most superhero movies ever have and it’s relevant to what’s in the news now. That’s just one thing that makes this movie so good. It also spends time developing the characters and their relationships with each other which makes you care about them. This causes you to buy in completely and allows you to enjoy the over the top action without question. The other genius thing that makes this one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen is the perfect amount of humor. Every bit of humor is well placed, makes perfect sense, and adds to the whole experience rather than taking away. It gives you the sense of “yes this is both an action movie and a serious drama, but hey, let’s don’t forget it’s a comic book.” .
Robert Redford is in this movie. His grandkids love Captain America and he wanted them to see him in the movie. He’s 78 years old, is one of the greatest actors that has ever lived, and has hair like the mane of a lion. Richard Gere’s hair absolutely hates Robert Redford’s hair. They can’t stand to be in the same room.
You don’t have to be a rabid comic book reader or Captain America fan to enjoy this movie. My date had no idea of the back story and when Stan Lee did his cameo Max had no idea who he was and he still loved the entire movie experience.
2 hours and 16 minutes Rated PG-13 for action and violence. There are 2 scenes, 1 halfway through the credits, and another at the end.
I say Scrap the next Avengers and get started on the next Captain America.
My Score: A full 6 pack of Bud
