Lamar reviews-G.I. Joe - Retaliation

The key to this movie is your expectations going in. You have to understand what this movie is. This is purely an action movie based on a soldier doll that was 12 inches in the 60s and relaunched in the 80s reduced to a little under 4 inches. They added a cartoon and a marketing plan and it was very successful. This is the second movie, the first one was in 2009. It also had Channing Tatum in it. It was not very good. To be honest I don't remember much about it but you don't need to for this one to work.

This movie has the hotness of Channing Tatum, the action movie experience of Bruce Willis, and the awesomeness of Dwayne "The Rock....can you smell what I’m cooking" Johnson. You have the Good Ninja Snake Eyes played by Ray Park, the Bad Ninja Storm Shadow played by Byung-hun Lee, hot female Joe, Lady Jaye, played by Adrianne Palicki, and hot female Ninja, Jinx, played by Elodie Yung! Add a group of villains named Cobra and tons of explosives. What more could you want? Well, Chuck Norris of course, but lets not be greedy.

The plot is pretty simple. The president played by Jonathan Pryce has been replaced by imposter Zartan, from the Cobra origination and he plans to destroy the G.I. Joe team and get the nuclear launch codes. The only people that can stop him are Roadblock played by Dwayne Johnson, Flint played by D.J. Cotrona, Lady Jaye, and the retired leader, Joe, played by Bruce Willis. This is the Bruce Willis that I wish had shown up in the last Die Hard movie.

The action sequences are just what you are looking for when you go to see this type of movie. Possibly the best one is when Snake Eyes and Jinx go after Storm Shadow and wind up fighting an army of Ninjas while swinging off repelling lines on the side of a cliff in the Himalayas.

This was supposed to be released in 2012 but when they screened it in front of test audiances they found that people wanted more of the buddy buddy interaction between Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock and Channing Tatum’s Duke. They had already started the advertising campaign but pulled the movie and added more Tatum since he became a bigger star. They also added some 3D to the action scenes. That way the offical line was the movie was pulled to add 3D.

Again, this is a fun action movie that is way more fun that it should be and it’s not pretending to be anything else. Make no mistake this ain't Lincoln but it is way better than the Die Hard debacle last month. This is a pure action popcorn flick that does what it's supposed to do. It is what it is, sorta like porn except you don't watch it in 15 minute segments.

110 minutes Rated PG-13 for intense combat violence and awesome martial arts action, and language.

My Score: 5 Cold Buds
