Is Chocolate Really in Danger of Going Extinct?

Or is this a ploy to get us to buy more chocolate?

January 3, 2018

My name is Kelly and I am a chocoholic. I love chocolate and couldn't imagine life without it.

But we may need to start imaging life without it because one candy company is predicting that it could be gone as soon as 2050!

Mars, the parent company behind candy brands like M&M's, Snickers, and Twix pledged $1 billion in September to help save chocolate. The report comes from research conducted by NOAA, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.  The article warns that climate change will cause the areas where cacao trees thrive will become "warmer, drier, and less suitable to cacao cultivation."

So what does this mean for us? If the cacao trees can't thrive, there will be less chocolate available and prices will rise.

But this isn't the first time that Mars had chocolate lovers all up in arms. They put out an article a few years ago that said chocolate supplies would be low as of 2020! That's just two years from now.

Thankfully, Snopes.com did some research of their own and cracked the case on the possible cacao shortage. So before you run out to the store to hoard all the chocolate you can, you may want to hold off.
