The stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series do battle in stock car racing’s true endurance test. Don’t miss the patriotic pre-race salute to the U.S. armed forces, which will include an air parade featuring at least 10 vintage war birds, a patriotic flyover and an American bald eagle circling the infield during the National Anthem.

The Patriot Festival Go The Extra Mile 5k

Start off Memorial Day with a special 5K+ Run/Walk and Go The Extra Mile for our military heroes. Participants may register for either the traditional 5K+ run/walk or choose to honor their military heroes with “Go the Extra Mile” with an additional mile added to the 5K.

The 2012 Patriot Festival Go The Extra Mile 5K was a big success with 437 runners supporting their military heroes with this special run on Memorial Day.

Registration for both the 5K and the “Extra Mile” is now available on line.

When the race is over, join us in Symphony Park for the awards ceremony and The Patriot Festival, 9:00am – 11:00am, Symphony Park at SouthPark featuring a parachute jump, JROTC performances and lots of fun activities for kids too. All race registrants and Extra Mile participants are invited to stay. The Festival is open to the public and free of charge.

The Native American Studies Center will offer this free lecture on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 12pm at the N.AS.C. located at 119 S Main Street in Lancaster, SC 29720. One of Lancaster’s most celebrated historical figures, J. Marion Sims established his reputation as the “father” of modern gynecology through research performed on enslaved African-American women. Was Sims unfairly exploiting this vulnerable population for professional gain? Or were his efforts part of an earnest attempt to relieve human suffering? In this talk, Adam Biggs will discuss the complex ethical issues surrounding Sims’ methods and consider their implications for modern medical research and his historical legacy.
